Esther Hubert Griffin
1894-1970

Esther was born at Springfield, Georgia. She graduated from Spelman College, Atlanta, Georgia in 1915. For several years thereafter, she was employed as a teacher at Cabin Creek High School in Griffin, Georgia. From Griffin she went to New York and attended Brown’s Business School at Jamaica, New York. Upon graduation, she returned to Atlanta, where she was employed as a teller at Citizens Trust Bank. In 1925 she left Atlanta for Tampa, Florida as secretary to Benjamin E. Mays, who was then the director of the Tampa Urban League. After that, she took a position as Relief Investigator for the Works Project Administration (WPA). The last position of her career was insurance agent for the Afro-American Insurance Company, also in Tampa, Florida.
Esther married Richard Griffin, a Tampa real estate broker in 1926. They had one son, Richard, Jr.
